Rubber & Polyurethane Machining

Rubber & Polyurethane Machining

With our CNC machining capabilities, such as vertical milling, turning and routing, we have the capacity to convert a wide range of polyurethane and rubber compounds into custom components and OEM consumable parts. Our CNC and CAD have the expertise to manufacture and replicate anything from simple 2D shapes to complex 3D components, both in low quantities and high volumes as required.

Rubber and polyurethane machining is a good alternative to moulded rubber or cast polyurethane components, as these manufacturing methods often require the commission of tooling. Machining parts removes the requirement for tooling, therefore can provide a cost effective manufacturing method for small scale projects and applications. Furthermore, CNC machining typically enables manufacturing to tighter tolerances than those produced by a moulding process.

We also offer a comprehensive plastic machining service from a wide range of stocked sheet, rod and tube materials.

Applications

Profiled seals and gaskets, wipers, bushes and spacers, damping elements, rollers, moulded rubber replacement components.

In order for us to be able to provide a quotation and manufacture your part, we need a dimensional drawing or pre-existing unworn sample to work from, along with the grade of rubber or polyurethane required.

Polyurethane Grades (Turned) - Hydrolysis Resistant

Polyurethane materials posess excellent properties in load bearing capacity, abrasion and impact resistance, tear strength, and resistance to oils, water and grease. All grades below are hydrolysis resistant, allowing them to maintain properties and perform well in steam and hot water applications. These particular grades can be turned on a lathe, but cannot be routed or milled.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
FDA Approved* Red -30 to +115 94°A (±3)
Standard Green -30 to +115 94°A (±3)
Low Temperature Dark Blue -50 to +115 94°A (±3)
Hard Dark Red -30 to +110 58°D (±3)
Lubricated Black -30 to +110 94°A (±3)
Lubricated, Hard Black -30 to +110 58°D (±3)
FDA, EU1935/2004 & EU10/2011 Approved White -30 to +110 93°A (±3)
Soft Light Green -30 to +95 86°A (±3)

*FDA approved red is our standard grade; others available upon request.

Nitrile Rubber Grades (Turned)

Nitrile rubber displays excellent resistance to petrol based fluids, oils and greases. It also offers good mechanical properties such as abrasion resistance and tensile strength, and is often used in the automotive sector. These particular grades can be turned on a lathe, but cannot be routed or milled.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
Standard Black -35 to +110 85°A (±5)
Hard Black -30 to +110 90°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -30 to +105 88°A (±5)
Soft Black -35 to +110 73°A (±5)
Low Temperature Black -50 to +105 82°A (±5)
Carboxylated (Abrasion Resistant) Black -30 to +110 89°D (±5)
Hydrogenated, FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved Green -30 to +150 82°A (±5)
Hydrogenated, Hard Black -20 to +150 95°A (±5)
Hydrogenated, Soft Black -35 to +150 75°A (±5)

EPDM Rubber Grades (Turned)

EPDM is frequently used for seals and gaskets in external applications due to its excellent water, ozone and ageing resistance. EPDM is a durable material and performs well in contact with alkalines, diluted acids and ketones. These particular grades can be turned on a lathe, but cannot be routed or milled.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
Standard Black -45 to +135 87°A (±5)
WRAS Approved Black -50 to +135 97°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -55 to +135 88°A (±5)
Soft Black -53 to +135 76°A (±5)
Soft, FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -50 to +135 77°A (±5)

Silicone Rubber Grades (Turned)

Silicone rubber grades perform well across a much wider temperature range than other rubber materials. They also provide excellent release properties and resistance to ozone, weathering, UV light and moisture. All options provide FDA approval for use in food contact applications. These particular grades can be turned on a lathe, but cannot be routed or milled.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -60 to +210 84°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved Blue -60 to +210 84°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved Red -60 to +210 83°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved Translucent -60 to +210 79°A (±5)

FKM Rubber Grades (Turned)

FKM is a high specification rubber which displays excellent resistance to elevated temperatures, acids, petrols and oils. It will resist brittleness when exposed to ozone, flame, or high temperatures. FKM is sometimes referred to as FPM and the brand name Viton®. These particular grades can be turned on a lathe, but cannot be routed or milled.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
FDA, EU1935/2004 & EU10/2011 Approved Brown -25 to +220 85°A (±5)
FDA & EU1935/2004 Approved White -25 to +210 84°A (±5)
Standard Black -20 to +220 80°A (±5)
Soft Black -25 to +220 74°A (±5)

Neoprene Rubber Grades (Turned)

A popular choice for external sealing applications due to its excellent weathing, ageing and ozone resistant properties. It is suitable for use with most oils and greases and provides moderate resistance to abrasion and tear. These particular grades can be turned on a lathe, but cannot be routed or milled.

Grade Colour Temperature (°C) Shore Hardness
Standard Black -40 to +100 81°A (±5)

Technical Specification

Polyurethane & Rubber Grades (CNC Milled or Routed)

All of the polyurethane and rubber grades listed above are available for turning only, making them particularly suitable for bespoke flat circular seals with an outside and inside diameter. More complex machined rubber and polyurethane components would be manufactured from standard sheet materials using our milling and routing capabilities.

Please see our polyurethane sheet and rubber sheeting pages for available grades. Please note, to be suitable for machining, the chosen grade must have a shore hardness of at least 70°A.
