Silicone rubber sheeting (SI) is a synthetic elastomer manufactured from a blend of silicon, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The material provides excellent flexibility across a broad temperature range (-60°C up to +200°C), offers high release properties and performs exceptionally well when exposed to ozone, weathering and ultraviolet light. It has a good compression set, is highly resistant to moisture and is an excellent electrical insulator. The elastomer is also biocompatible, but is not suitable for use with acids, ketones or petrochemicals and offers poor resistance to abrasion and tear.
Due to the aforementioned characteristics, silicone rubber sheeting is used in a broad range of applications. It is often manufactured into gaskets for use in high temperature environments or is used to create seals for electrical enclosures. The elastomer can also be used as a liner in prosthetics and is a popular option in the food, drink and pharmaceutical industries due to its inertness and conformance with FDA food contact regulations.
